The city of Stockton became of age during the Gold Rush era.  When gold was discovered, Stockton became a staging center for miners who were arriving from San Francisco by riverboat headed for the southern mine of the Mother Lode.  As the mines ran dry, miners returned to the San Joaquin Valley to farm the rich soil.  Riverboats transported a steady stream of products to San Francisco and from there the products were transported to foreign markets.  Flourmills and grain elevators once lined the Stockton waterfront.  Stockton has become one of the fastest developing warehousing and distribution centers in California.  Once again with the rich land, agriculture is the number one product. Stockton attracts a wide range of business and recreational activities.  With the City being on the waters of the San Joaquin/Sacramento Delta offers boating, fishing, water skiing, sailing and many fine restaurants which cater to the water enthusiasts.  Stockton is also home to many arts and cultural activities, music, theater, and literary events, which many are held at San Joaquin Delta College and the infamous, University of the Pacific.
